While earning his masters degree, Matt monitored the movement patterns of brook, brown and rainbow trout within the Shining Rock Wilderness area of Haywood Co., North Carolina.

The Great Smoky Mountains Trout School is one of the many services under the umbrella of the Cold Mountain Trout Company. The company was started in 1995 by Matthew Rhea and his wife Tracie under the name of their farm: Sorrell's Creek Trout Farm. For the past 10 years Matt and his wife along with their children: Emily (9), Rebecca (7), Jesse (5) and the newest addition Madeline, have owned and operated the company and farm where they currently raise around 80,000 lbs. of rainbow trout annually.
Matt's passion for studying the behavior of trout, along with his deep love for fly fishing the mountain streams around his home, have enabled Matt to accumulate a vast amount of knowledge of the regions trout and how best to catch them. Matt is also a biologist (with a BS degree in Zoology and a MS degree in Biology) who has researched trout populations in Western North Carolina streams for the past ten years.

The Great Smoky Mountains Trout School was developed to teach not only the beginning angler the basics, but also the more advanced angler the reasons behind their successes, or sometimes even those "skunked" trips.
